Winter is coming... I've run across a singer-songwriter from my neighboring state of Wisconsin (where incidentally I spent every Summer at the cabin as a kid) who has me intrigued. His name is Justin Vernon and the project is called Bon Iver (as in the French "good winter" - but purposely misspelled). The album - For Emma, Forever Ago - was written during three months of winter seclusion in a small cabin tucked away in Northwestern Wisconsin. The album has been out for a while... guess I'm a little late to the party on this one... but I'm glad to have stumbled on it now. It really fits the mood of the changing seasons outside. You can almost hear the aching, lonely introspection in every note and turn of phrase. The cold wind in the trees. The crunch of snow under your feet. The crackle of kindling on the fire. Yes - it's a bit melancholic, but only in the most beautiful, tortured way. His vocal style is somewhat unusual - almost off-putting. But through layers of falsetto and soaring melody, I hear something very real and soulful. Although this is an unfiltered, raw style that I'm normally not into... it is music that makes you feel something on a deeper level. I can't help but be drawn in. Maybe you will be too? Here is his performance for Black Cab Sessions (I bet it WAS fun!):
